இவை உலகத்திலுள்ள மிகப் பெரிய மரங்கள் என்று பெயர் பெற்றவை. இவற்றின் தண்டு நேராக உயர்ந்து வளர்ந்து ,கீழ் நோக்கி சற்றுச் சாய்வாக கிளைகளைப் பரப்புகின்றன. கிட்டத்தட்ட 8 -12 அடி வரை விட்டமுள்ள தண்டுடன் 300 அடிக்கு மேல் உயர்ந்து வளர்கின்றன. இந்த அசாதாரண உயரத்தினால். வேர்களினால் உரிஞ்சப் படும் நீர் உச்சிவரை செலுத்தப் படுவதில்லை. இதன் உச்சியில் காணப்படும் ஊசி முனைகள் அங்கே படியும் பனியைத் தேக்கி வைத்து உறிஞ்சும் தன்மையுள்ளன. இதனால் பனி கொட்டும் பிரதேசங்களில் தான் இந்த மரங்கள் பெருகிக் காணப்படுகின்றன. 20 வீதம் விதைகளாலும், 80 வீதம் இயற்கைப் பதியத்தாலும் இவை இனத்தைப் பெருக்குகின்றன.

Sequoioideae, commonly referred to as Redwoods, is a subfamily of coniferous trees within the family Cupressaceae, that range in the northern hemisphere. It includes the largest and tallest trees in the world. The trees in the subfamily are amongst the most notable trees in the world and are common ornamental trees. The subfamily reached its peak of dominance during the early cenozoic with genera, sequoia and metasequoia.
